It is with a heavy heart that Special Olympics Flagler County says goodbye to our oldest and dearest friend and athlete, Francis O'Rourke, who passed away peacefully at his home in Palm Coast, FL at 12:45 pm on Tuesday, May 25, 2010. We offer our deepest and sincerest condolences to Barbara Kemper and her family and are truly grateful for knowing Francis through the Special Olympics Flagler County Family. Francis was born on November 11, 1944 in the “City of Brotherly Love”, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, were he grew up with his parents, siblings and family members. Francis has been involved with Special Olympics for the past ten years and has competed in aquatics, basketball, bowling and cycling winning many ribbons and medals. Francis was also selected as Special Olympics Flagler County’s Athlete of the Month last year. Francis will be transported to Pennsylvania, were he will have a Christian burial and will be laid to rest in the family plot in Pennsylvania. For all of us here at Special Olympics Flagler County Family that would like to express their condolences, we will have a Memorial Mass for Francis on Thursday, June 24, 2010 at 1:00pm at Santa Maria Del Mar Catholic Church in Flagler Beach. We encourage everyone to attend.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!!! Flagler County Special Olympics and Flagler County Sports Fishing Club have teamed up once again for our 2nd annual fundraising fishing tournament to be held on September 10 & 11, 2010. Stay tuned in our next issues of this newsletter for more details on this Special Event.

» Flagler Takes Home Awards at Leadership Conference

During the 2010 Special Olympics Florida Leadership Conference on July 15-18, 2010, Flagler County was honored to have been chosen to receive the following awards to the following individuals who performed outstanding volunteer service and/or provided financial support to our program within the past year.

Family of the Year - Pinto Family (Joseph, Christina, Brandon, & Christopher)
Marilyn Grigsby Award - Mr. Kenneth Seybold – Matanzas High School
Outstanding Coaches Education & Training Program - Flagler County Special Olympics. Flagler County also received an award for “submitting our paperwork efficiently”

Special Olympics believes that through sports training and competition, people with intellectual disabilities benefit physically, mentally, socially, and spiritually; families are strengthened; and the community at large, both through participation and observation, is united in understanding people with intellectual disabilities in an environment of equality, respect, and acceptance. YOU WANT A SOMETHING TO DO OVER THE SUMMER?
WE GOT A SPORT FOR YOU!

Could it be Aquatics, Bowling, Power lifting, Softball skills or T-Ball Skills? Come join the coaches and get all the information for these specific sports programs.

We will be having sign-ups on Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at Matanzas High School in the Pirates Conference Room from 7:00pm to 8:00pm. Everyone ages 8 & up are welcome to attend and sign up. Athletes will be able to sign-up for these sports until June 12, 2010.

      All Athletes MUST have a current physical in order to participate.

If you are interested in participating or even coaching any of these sports, WE NEED YOU! WE NEED EQUIPMENT too!
